Battalion Chief with the City of Richmond, Department of Fire and Emergency Services

Bailey Martin is a Battalion Chief with the City of Richmond, Department of Fire and Emergency Services.  Chief Martin also works part time with the Virginia Department of Fire Programs.  He has over 22 years of fire service experience.  He holds Bachelor's Degree from Randolph-Macon Virginia and a Master's Degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Homeland Security.  He has presented multiple times the Virginia Fire Equity and Diversity Conference and at the Virginia Fire Chief's Conference.  He has filled a variety of roles at RFD including roles in administration, safety, Swift Water, HAZMAT, Technical Rescue and a variety of other operational roles.  He is also a key member of the department's DEI committee, peer support team and podcast host.  Chief Martin has been married to his wife Christy for 15 years and has 5 daughters ranging in age from 9 to 29. He is also an active member of the Sappony tribe in North Carolina.

Presentation Summary

Inclusion is not a bad word.  It’s a leadership style.

There is a political push to diminish the value of inclusion in the workplace and other public spaces. This interactive presentation will address some of the common misconceptions about inclusion and how it affects work environments.  The group will use data, dialogue and group participation to demonstrate the importance and value of an inclusive leadership style.  The group will also explore what practices can help promote inclusion at various levels within their organizations.
